Goa: The Place I love ...

  1. As I started work on this piece, it reminded what ones Drew Draper said "Nostalgia literally means the pain from an old wound. It’s a twinge in your heart, far more powerful than memory alone. . It takes us to a place where we ache to go again" It lets us travel the way a child travels.

Truly I was traveling back in time..

I was drawing the past which was now rapidly vanishing in the name of progress

As I started out my sketches. I moved to draw more coconut trees, fields, hills, river, Goan houses with balcao's, temples, churches, fields..people celebrating together.

I stressed myself recollecting my childhood memories, the smaller things that mattered to me the most while growing up and slowly drew in elements that made Goa truly what it was.

For I realized a day will soon come when no palms will dance against the wind

The sound of the waves will only live through shells

For now I have seen the mountains bleeds red , every field is losing its palette of greens, deep yellows and more, the hands that grew them are fading along as the grey rises high..slowly there will be no meaning left for the rain..

I captured characters that make Goa what it is like the traditional toddy tapper, The bread man (podherio) who brought me bangles(toast) for tea, fisher women who came with stories to your door, I will miss the beautiful prints that the village women wore, dressed. This set of generation is also going away.(reminder: Must try one of these dresses ) The beautiful oyster shell windows ..

That day no money will be able to buy back what is lost

For lost will have a deeper meaning for Goans.

A paradise, a home lost and robbed from its deep roots, its peace, its soul, its people.

Where our hearts had grown free to love and play..

For living won't be living truly, it will be just surviving

It's wonderful to revisit my memories and put them on paper that will live forever before I too fade away
